Last year I was a judge for Metro magazine’s 2020 Cheap Eats feature. We were asked to write about our favourite dish from a place that didn’t quite make the cut. Read on to find out where to get what I think is the best banh mi in Auckland.

I’ve tried a lot of banh mi in Auckland and Viki’s is one of the best. I get the grilled pork always; it’s succulent and caramelised and the baguette is crunchy, fluffy perfection. It comes with the usual suspects: cucumber, pickled carrot and radish, fresh chill and coriander and of course pâté. The freshness and balance of tastes and textures makes their banh mi the perfect meal you can hold in one hand.

I recently visited Viki’s restaurant (as oppose to ordering it to be delivered to the hospital) and was impressed to see meat sandwiched in barbecue cages rotating over real charcoal, which explains why the flavour of the pork in their banh mi is so wonderfully caramelised and flavourful. Good Vietnamese and banh mi is worth crossing the city for.
